Presenting at the British Society of Special Care Dentistry
We were recently asked to give a presentation to the British Society of Special Care Dentistry teaching and learning group. This was a great opportunity to meet colleagues from dental schools across the whole of the UK; from Aberdeen to Plymouth and all points in between!
Wendy Smith MBE, our Strategic Lead for Community Engagement, gave an overview of Well Connected and talked about how we use our community insights to enhance and add value to dental education.
She was able to highlight how these unique outreach and engagement experiences help students to develop their organisational, communication and interpersonal skills as well as deepen their understanding of health, wellbeing and inequalities. There was lots of discussion about how this impacts on students from both a personal and professional viewpoint as well as how they influence patient management skills.
Wendy had lots of questions to answer and comments to respond to which mainly focused on how our approach can be adapted for dental schools in other parts of the country.
Nick Beacher, Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Special Care Dentistry at University of Glasgow was really impressed and said:
“The work you do is truly incredible. Your passion for and commitment to community projects, and their relationship with education really does shine through. Thank you for joining us!”
We are thrilled that there was so much interest in what we do, how we do it and are looking forward to making new and exciting connections in the future.
We love being loud and proud about our work!
