Top tips for great oral health. A healthy happy smile really is the best accessory!

A bright and healthy smile not only radiates confidence but also plays an important role in our overall well-being. So why is brushing our teeth so important?

Well, not only does taking care of your teeth helps you to feel happier, healthier and more confident; brushing removes food debris and plaque bacteria which lead to cavities, enamel erosion, bad breath etc. Check out these 6 steps for more info!

1. Brush twice a day;

Brushing your teeth is the cornerstone to keeping your mouth clean and fresh as it stops plaque building up on your teeth. Plaque is a film of bacteria which coats your teeth if you don’t brush…yuck! Use a small blob of fluoride toothpaste and brush twice a day, always before bed and at one other time of the day. Check the packaging to find out how much fluoride each brand contains. Adults should use a toothpaste that contains at least 1,350 parts per million (ppm) fluoride.

2. Brush for two minutes;

There are lots of apps which help with toothbrushing and most electric toothbrushes have built in timers. Brush in small circles and make sure you clean all surfaces of your teeth, don’t forget the molars right at the back of your mouth! Gently brush your tongue as well as bacteria can build up here too.

3. Spit, don’t rinse;

Yes its true, rinsing washes away the fluoride which protects your teeth. So just spit out any excess toothpaste and you’re good to go!

4. Choose the right toothbrush;

It doesn't matter whether you use an electric or manual toothbrush. They're both equally good, as long as you clean all the surfaces of all your teeth and you use fluoride toothpaste. Select a medium bristle toothbrush with a small head that's comfortable to use. Replace it every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become splayed.

5. Master the technique;

Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use gentle, circular motions, making sure your brush each tooth. Looking a mirror can help as it reminds you to brush all surfaces of your teeth; front, back, and the chewing surfaces.

6. Clean between your teeth;

There are lots of interdental cleaning aids to help clean in between your teeth, it can all be a bit overwhelming! But this is a vital step in preventing gum disease and cavities. Dental floss, dental tape, dental floss sticks and interdental brushes will all help to clean between your teeth, removing food particles and plaque that can build up between your teeth and along the gumline.

Prevention really is key! Establishing toothbrushing as part of your daily routines will help you to have a smile you are proud of. Check out our oral health resources for more information.
