Robotics in Dentistry

We provided the Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement element to this exciting and cutting edge research as we have the skills and connections to bring people together.

We have been working closely with Professor Mona Nasser and a team of researchers at University of Plymouth on a Robotics in Dentistry project.

We are providing the Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement element to this exciting and cutting edge research as we have the skills and connections to bring people together and the expertise to facilitate conversations and discussions where every voice is heard.

Our first focus group took place in June 2023; a group of clinicians, academics, members of the public and students had an opportunity to ask the researchers questions and see a demonstration of QT, a friendly and very clever robot!

The main theme was to introduce the concept of robotic technologies, explore how they can be used to enhance learning opportunities as well as how they could help people who may experience dental anxiety. There was lots of interesting and active discussion about data security, ethical requirements and how robots could benefit person centred care.

It was great to have so many people attending as they each brought their own experience and expertise. The conversation was lively and energetic!

We are looking forward to the next steps of the project when we will explore how robots can help to identify when people are displaying signs of anxiety and discuss how this can inform dental education in the future.

We would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed so brilliantly.

“Really pleased to attend today. It was great to meet the researchers, dentists and academics and have the opportunity to give a different point of view.”
