Physiotherapy Workshop

A workshop designed for Physiotherapy students to encourage them to recognise the value of listening and enable them to consider the importance of a person centred care approach within their practice.

We delivered a workshop session for University of Plymouth Physiotherapy students as part of their ‘Living and Staying Well’ module.

The aim of the workshop is to encourage students to recognise the value of listening and enable them to consider the importance of a person centred care approach within their scope of practice.

A series of 5 roundtable discussions took place, with students meeting people with long term health conditions who we call ‘Experts by Experience’. This was an opportunity for students to hear directly from people with a range of conditions, who told them about the impact on their daily lives and activities.

Experts encouraged students to ask questions and led interesting conversations which enabled the students to consider their patient management skills and reflect on the importance of communication and active listening.

Several Experts used resources and materials to demonstrate the impact of reduced mobility on everyday tasks.

This is the second year we have been invited to deliver this powerful learning experience and once again we believe it will leave a long-lasting impression on the students. The session was engaging, interactive and enjoyable and took learning beyond the text book which made it truly person centred.

Check out the academic poster below about this workshop.

“I have a better understanding as to how someone with a long term health condition might feel during a physio appointment, and recognise that you have to treat the person as a whole not just their condition.”

Physiotherapy Student, University of Plymouth

“This was an opportunity to have really honest and open conversations about lived experiences. I have gained an experience not possible from a book or a lecture. It has been excellent.”

Physiotherapy Student, University of Plymouth

“This has been a fabulous session. The Roundtable Discussions went so well, the students got something wonderful from meeting you and the amazing Experts. Thank you so much.”
