Foundation Dentist Community Engagement Project

Creating a meaningful and effective community engagement module for Foundation Dentists which enhance their clinical and academic skills. 100’s of Foundation Dentists have completed this module with many local community organisations benefiting from the engagement.
Following their graduation from Dental School, newly qualified dentists undertake a further ‘foundation’ training year and those working in the South West region are required to take part in a community engagement project.
As expert providers in community engagement, we were asked to create the framework of the project in 2017. We worked alongside the South West Dental Training Team and Dental Public Health Consultant to create an impactful community engagement module for Foundation Dentists.
We take an active role throughout the project and enjoy presenting at study days, mentoring and supporting the Foundation Dentists by enabling engagement, providing resources and advice as required.
Examples of projects include:
Providing training for carers in a nursing home
Delivering an activity session for people attending a drug rehabilitation hostel
Sharing key oral health messages for members of the public in a ‘drop in’ workshop
